Frome Voices
Musical Director
Every good choir needs a good leader and ours is:
Alan Burgess
musical director
Our Musical Director is Alan Burgess. Alan studied music at Edinburgh University where he cultivated his love of choral music, and then began teaching in secondary schools. He has directed various local choirs, including the Athenaeum Singers in Warminster, Frome Youth Choir and Christ Church Singers, a chamber choir in Frome.
He is a co-founder of Frome Voices and, having retired from headship in 2015, now fills his time piano teaching, conducting and accompanying choirs in Bradford on Avon, Beckington and Midsomer Norton. He frequently performs with Frome Drama Club, acts as a trustee of Jackdaws Music Education Trust and as a consultant for Sound Foundation Somerset. He also maintains an ongoing link with an orang-utan conservation project in Borneo.
Alan has high expectations and is able to articulate his clear ideas about performance style in imaginative and accessible ways, inspiring experienced musicians as well as those who are singing in a choir for the first time. And he has a great sense of humour!
